PART A (EMPLOYABILITY SKILLS)
UNIT 1 - COMMUNICATION SKILLS
CHAPTER 2 - COMMUNICATION CYCLE
(PART 2)
Defining Feedback
Feedback is an essenal factor in the process of the communicaon cycle. It is the response or reacon
of the receiver to the sender aſter perceiving or understanding the message. Here, the receiver becomes
the sender and vice versa.
Aſter gaining the receiver's response, the sender takes further acons, thereby compleng the
communicaon cycle.
Example
The monitor of your class has been instructed by the teacher to explain the rules of sing in the library.
She explains each rule one by one. You all listen to her carefully and follow the rules. As a result, the
class gets the reward of being the most disciplined class in school. The recognion reveals the impact of
the feedback.
Based on the feedback from the receiver, the sender can evaluate the
effectiveness of the message.
Example
Your teacher guides you about the place to keep your skates in the classroom aſter the acvity gets
over. You do not listen carefully and keep it carelessly in between the passage. As a result, one of your
classmates hurts himself. This reveals that communicaon was not effecve. If you had carefully paid
aenon to your teacher's instrucons, you would have kept the skates at the designated place, and
your classmate would have been saved from injury.
Feedback can be positive or negative.
Posive feedback indicates that the sender can connue his communicaon in the same manner as
before.
Negave feedback, on the other hand, suggests a need for change in the mode of communicaon. If the
receiver gives appropriate feedback to the sender, the sender can modify or remodel his strategy of
communicaon.
If no feedback is given, it indicates agreement or reluctance in accepng ideas.
CLASS 10TH INFORMATION TECHNOLOGY
Importance of Feedback
Feedback is required to connue the process of acve communicaon. It can be effecve only when it is
heard, interpreted, and accepted. It determines the way forward.
Feedback helps people to get on track. It guides them to know how others perceive their performance.
Feedback is a vital part of effecve learning as it gives clear guidance to the students on how to improve
their knowledge and performance.
It can enhance a student's confidence, self-awareness, and enthusiasm for learning. Depending on the
feedback, one can take the right acon for the next step.
Importance of Feedback
Effective feedback must...
Be linked to the work the student is doing and not measured against other student's progress
Be linked to the learning intenon and success criteria
Include specific areas of improvement and provide next steps for the students
Be delivered in accessible ways and at an appropriate me so that the students are able to act
upon it
Let us understand the importance of feedback with the help of an
example.
Example
During a clay modeling period, the teacher was giving feedback on the performance of students.
Rohan, one of the students, was disheartened as he could not make a model of an aeroplane even
aſter it was demonstrated to him 4-5 mes. The teacher observed him and figured out the problem.
She said, "Rohan, you can do it. It's just that you need to do it carefully with a focused mind. I have
full confidence in you. Try again!"
Result:
With such posive feedback from the teacher, Rohan experienced a surge in his confidence. He did
well this me. Everybody clapped loudly as his efforts were laudable.
Feedback is important in the following ways:
CLASS 10TH INFORMATION TECHNOLOGY
Basis of Problem-Solving: When the receiver gets a message, it is
up to him to agree with the sender or not. If the receiver disagrees with the sender, it can cause a
problein. In this case, the feedback can help the sender jusfy the response of the receiver. It
enables the sender to interpret the behaviour of the receiver and take the next step accordingly.
Hence, it serves as the basis of problem-solving.
Effecve Listening: Feedback results into effecve listening.
When feedback is given, the sender becomes cauous of the message sent by him. He re-analyses
his message and correlates it with the feedback. This enables him to understand if the
communicaon has been successful.
Can Motivate: Students need movaon to study and to perform the given task well. Right
feedback given at the right me can do wonders for them. It can show them the right path that
needs to be followed to lead them towards their desired goal.
Can Improve Performance: Good performance is what everybody strives for. it can take you
to new heights. For that, you need to overcome your fears, shortcomings, and worries. Good
feedback enables you to overcome your fears and accomplish your goals age and determinaon.
with courage
Tool for Continued Learning: Feedback plays a vital role in learning. Learning is an ongoing
process. Proper feedback prevents you from geng distracted and pushes you to remain aligned to
your goals. It helps you to focus on the improvement areas and learn connuously, which in turn,
opens a new world of opportunies.
Descriptive Feedback
Descripve feedback includes specific informaon in the form of wrien comments or verbal
conversaons that help the learner understand what he needs to do in order to improve.
According to Black, Harrison, Lee & Wiliam (2003), "Descripve Feedback is the most powerful tool
for improving students' learning."
In other words, it enables students to learn about their current achievement along with the
weaknesses which need to be improved. It includes suggesons to help them achieve their
objecves. It also provides a direcon for the students to idenfy the steps taken to fulfil their goals.
However, it does not include grades, marks, or coded symbols.
Benefits of Descriptive Feedback
Descripve Feedback should be focused on how well the task has been accomplished along with
providing suggesons to improve further. It offers the following benefits:
CLASS 10TH INFORMATION TECHNOLOGY
• Provides useful informaon to students about their learning.
• Fills the gap between their present level of performance and the learning goal.
• Enables the students to self-assess and set their goals accordingly.
When the students get informave feedback about their work, they get a chance to analyse how
they have performed, which concepts they have understood clearly, and which concepts need
improvement. They can make an outline of the areas which need improvement and proceed further
with more clarity.
Factors Essential to Giving Descriptive Feedback
The following points should be taken into consideraon to make descripve feedback effecve:
Goal-Oriented: Feedback should be given keeping the aim of learning in mind, as students work
towards achieving the learning objecve. Many a me, students are unaware of the learning aim.
They should know what their learning aim is and how they are going to achieve it.
Actionable: When students have knowledge but do not know where to apply it, they lose interest
in learning. Hence, their experience should be put to use by giving them specific direcon.
User-Friendly: The feedback should be given in an easy to understand language so that students
can comprehend what they are supposed to do to achieve the learning aim. Otherwise, the
feedback provided to them will prove to be worthless.
Timely: The students should receive the feedback on me, i.e., when it is sll possible for them to
put it to use. The feedback needs to be given to them when they are sll striving for their goal, not
when they have already achieved it.
Continuous: Feedback should be given connuously, along with instrucons. This enables the
students to remain focused on their goal.
Consistent: The students should be given a consistent feedback. Otherwise, they will not be able to
rely on it, and in turn, will not be able to follow it.
Specific and Non-Specific Feedback
Specific Feedback
Specific feedback provides detailed informaon about something parcular, relang to a task or the
individual's performance. It is beneficial as it gives the receiver something substanal to think about
and work on the areas which need improvement.
CLASS 10TH INFORMATION TECHNOLOGY
For example, "It was impressive that you started with a queson to hook the listeners. I like it."
Note that here this tacc can be replicated while narrang the stories in future to leave a lasng
impression on the listeners' mind. It provides guideline for the future.
Non-Specific Feedback
Non-specific feedback, in general, gives a vague response to the receiver. It may not be of much
help, as it does not guide the receiver properly to achieve the desired goal. It gives the impression
that the sender has not given a thoughul response.
For example, "Great job!"
The issue with the above remark is that it is not specific. It does not indicate what went right that led
to success. It also does not provide any detail about how to repeat this success story with future
projects.
